Chemically speaking ...

... polyurethanes are polymers. There are natural polymers such as cellulose (a component of wood, which is used for paper production), proteins, and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, the molecule that stores the genetic information). In the chemical industry artificially produced polymers are summarized under the term "plastics". Known representatives are, for example, polyethylenes, polyesters, polystyrenes, and polyurethanes, common brands are Nylon, Teflon, etc.

The fundamental feature of polymers is that many small molecules are connected in chains and in this manner, very long chains can be created. (The syllables "poly" and "mer" are derived from the Greek, meaning "many parts".) Polyurethanes are chain molecules in which the individual molecules are linked via a urethane bond. The polyurethane bond is chemically relatively inert, which means: If the bond is once established, it can be broken only with relatively high effort. Thus it is correspondingly stable, even in an organic environment.

Micropolyurethane foam = Microthane®

All soft tissue implants currently used have a silicone shell, but are offered with different surfaces. One of these surfaces is a coating of polyurethane. Our polyurethane coating is called Microthane®.

Microthane® coated implants retain their position in the body and will not rotate or dislocate. They also contribute to a reduction in the overall complication rate and reduce the risk for capsular contracture.*

What is so special about the Microthane® coating?

Microthane® is a medical-grade micro-foam (polyurethane), which is covalently attached to the surface of the implant. The sponge-like structure increases the surface area of the tissue capsule that forms during the healing around the implant. This causes a capsular contracture to become a rare event. Simultaneously, the implant is thus fixed in its position.

POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics is Europe's only manufacturer of breast implants with a coating of Microthane®.

The basis of silicone is silicon linked to oxygen in a polymerized chain that has elastic properties. Silicon is the second most prevalent element on earth. The surface of the earth consists up to 28% of silicon, it can be found in stones, clay and sand.

Thus, silicone is a natural material. Silicone is a synthesized product utilized in many different industries. POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics only utilizes medical-grade silicones specifically formulated for our products. Silicone does not contain any additives, especially no softeners. It has been used for medical devices for more than 40 years, for example in probes, catheters, coatings of puncture needles and pacemakers, gloves and wound dressings

In the field of soft-tissue surgery, silicone implants may be used to correct the body contour. Years of clinical experience and a large number of tests carried out on implants, coatings, etc. demonstrate the safety of silicone in medical applications.

We encounter silicone every day: as anti-foaming agents for cooking, as water-repellent for clothing, as electrical insulation, as anti-acids for the stomach, as carrier spray in antiperspirants, as the shine in cosmetics, etc. Intensive studies have not provided evidence of allergic reactions to silicone.

Silicone is available in the form of silicone elastomer, silicone gel, and silicone oil. For the manufacture of our implants we exclusively use high-quality medical-grade silicones certified for long-term implantation. (>> Characteristics of our implants)

Combat capsular contracture

Common complications occurring after breast augmentation with implants are the formation of a capsular contracture or the rotation or dislocation of the implant.

What is capsular contracture?

The formation of a capsule around an implant is normal, to a certain degree, because the body's immune system recognizes it as a foreign body and "wraps" it in tissue. The capsule can contract and harden. Depending on the intensity of the capsular contracture it can cause pain and an aesthetically inacceptable result. In most cases, a re-operation for the exchange of the affected implant then becomes necessary.

How do I prevent?

Through the careful selection of an experienced physician and a high-quality breast implant, you can reduce the mentioned risks to a minimum.

The implant surface plays a crucial role. Implants with textured surface (Mesmo® sensitive, POLYtxt®) and implants with Microthane® envelope reduce the risk of capsular contracture. Especially implants enveloped in Microthane® contribute to an overall lower complication rate. In Europe, POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics is the only manufacturer of Microthane® enveloped implants.

A cosmetic intervention is a surgical procedure and should be considered seriously and extensively. If you opt for surgery, it is important that you know exactly what the risks are and ponder them properly. (>> General information)

Cosmetic surgery can make you feel at ease with your body and thus provide for a higher quality of life. This will allow you to feel generally more comfortable and probably change your charisma. In this way, your life might change fundamentally – however, a surgery is no guarantee for it.

You should not make decisions on a whim, on no account have somebody force your decision and not accept to be unduly influenced by other people. Nor should you have the intervention performed without having conducted an intensive consultation with an experienced physician. (>> Check list surgeon)

Good sources for additional information on the different procedures, addresses of competent surgeons and general issues are the professional associations. Also ask your friends and acquaintances, perhaps someone has gained positive experience and can recommend a surgeon.

The motivation for cosmetic surgery can vary. The desire for a younger, fresher appearance is crucial in most cases. In addition, there exist several other reasons such as the desire for a slimmer shape or larger or firmer breasts.

Preparation is everything

The better informed you are, the safer you will feel and the more satisfied you will be with the outcome. For your decision, you should take sufficient time. Look intensively into the subject, check the options and possible complications. Read all about it – because risks exist and a cosmetic procedure can not be undone. Even the best doctor cannot give you 100% guarantee for the success of the intervention. (>> Preparation)

Good sources for addresses of competent surgeons are their professional associations. Also ask your friends and acquaintances, perhaps someone has gained positive experience and can recommend a surgeon.

Trust your surgeon

If you have opted for a plastic surgery, the most important prerequisite for a successful and sustainable intervention is a relationship of trust with an experienced physician. In an initial consultation, you and the specialist should clarify your personal motives and expectations regarding the intervention. Also discuss in detail the exact procedure, possible side effects and risks. In this way, you develop realistic expectations and will be satisfied with the result. (Check list surgeon)

Right at the beginning, talk about the costs involved and the permanency of the intervention's outcome, as far as experience can tell. Just as costs, aftercare should be a topic of the first consultation. Also collect information about the products and materials your doctor utilizes and why. (>> Characteristics of our implants)

Get yourself involved actively in the preparation and decision-making process – because it is about your body and your health.

The aftercare should be a subject at the very first appointment with your doctor. Intensive supervision and regular monitoring after surgery is needed and a sign of quality – no matter whether it concerns an outpatient treatment or a surgical intervention, such as breast augmentation.

After surgery, it is important to protect the treated area well, for example with high quality compression garments. Closely follow the instructions, which you get from your doctor – doing so you facilitate an easy healing process.

In addition to regular checks with your doctor, do not forget to have cancer screening. For women with breast implants, mammography is performed using a special technique (the Eklund technique). Modern imaging techniques – high-resolution ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography – support the timely discovery of a tumor.

A decision for or against a cosmetic procedure should be considered carefully. Take sufficient time to make it.

Prior to your decision seek extensive advice from a well-trained doctor with many years experience and possibly get a second opinion. Important for a surgeon are many years of expertise and a high number of successful operations performed every year by her/him. (>> Check list surgeon)

Only if you are really sure about your decision, have collected comprehensive information in preparation and feel comfortable with your doctor, you should decide in favor of a treatment. The more informed you are and the more realistic your expectations, the more satisfied you will be with the outcome.

Also ask which materials or implants your surgeon uses – for implants are not equal and quality is unfortunately not a given.

As the only German manufacturer of breast implants, POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics has provided the highest quality for over 25 years and ensures the certified safety of our implants. (Products / About Us / Warranty)

It is important that you find a surgeon you trust and who will provide competent advice. This is essential because you have to feel that you go into good hands, and because the result of the surgery depends heavily on his experience and knowledge.

Good sources for addresses of competent surgeons are their professional associations. Also ask your friends and acquaintances, perhaps someone has gained positive experience and can recommend a surgeon.

To find out if your surgeon is the right choice for your desired procedure, you should ask her/him a lot of questions. Following a list of questions you may ask during the first consultation:

  • How long have you practiced as an aesthetic plastic surgeon? (Minimum 5 years)
  • How often have you performed the planned surgery within the last 12 months? Can I see your gallery of before-and-after photos?
  • May I talk to patients of yours who have had this surgery?
  • In the case of breast augmentation:
o What size and what form would you choose for my implants? Why?
o How will you proceed? Which approach will you choose? (under the breasts, nipple, armpit) Why?
o What surface will my implants have? Why?
o What implants do you use (manufacturer)? Why?
o How long will I have the implants?
o What are the complications and more specifically what are your complication rates with this surgery?
  • What examinations will you carry out to determine whether I can have the intervention? (A thorough preliminary examination should include questions about existing allergies, chronic diseases, intake of anticoagulants, the tendency for increased scarring, etc.)
  • What type of anesthesia will you use? Will I tolerate the anesthesia well? What can be the side effects and consequences?
  • What will be the total costs of the intervention? Is the follow-up included?
  • Can I have a look in the operating room and the recovery room?
  • How many days do I have to take off? How long will it take until I will have fully regenerated?
  • What follow-up is required? How often should I come for follow-up?
  • Do I have to expect any restrictions after the surgery? (for example regarding sports)

A good doctor will conduct a detailed consultation with you and examine you thoroughly. He will surely and gladly show pictures of his previous patients to you, not make unrealistic promises about the result to be expected, and not push you to a quick decision. (see chapter: Preparation)

Breast enhancement has become one of the most common aesthetic surgical procedures performed on women. There are different procedures which may be appropriate for you:

Regardless of which procedure you choose, please remember that it is a surgical intervention. The selection of an experienced physician or surgeon is thus the most important prerequisite for a successful and sustainable intervention free of complications.

One should also consider the implant that you will hopefully have inserted into your body for a long time. We recommend to evaluate the quality of your future implant carefully and not base a decision solely on the price of the implant.

How to find the right surgeon

Breast augmentation

The breast is the epitome of femininity. But not every woman is happy with her décolleté. There are several approaches to augment a breast or reshape a desirable cleavage. Together with your surgeon you will choose a specific method depending on the results of your examination and your personal preferences and body image.

The decision to have a breast augmentation with implants has several advantages:

- State-of-the-art silicone implants are safe and filled with high-quality medical-grade silicone – they will not leak or deform under
  normal strain.
- The shape of anatomical implants produces very natural-looking results.

The position of the incision through which the implant is inserted depends on the technique used by your surgeon and the patient expectations. The following three implant positions are chosen the most often: the inframammary fold, the nipple area or the armpit. Your surgeon will be aware of their specific advantages and disadvantages. Utilizing any of these implant insert positions, the implant can be placed either behind the mammary glands or – partly or wholly – behind the pectoral muscle.

Detailed discussions with your surgeon prior to the intervention will help to define the appropriate surgical technique for you.

Breast reduction and lifting

It is not just small breasts that make many women approach a plastic surgeon, also an excess of breast tissue or skin can negatively affect self-esteem or cause health problems such as after extensive breast feeding.

With plastic surgery, large breasts can be reduced, asymmetrical breasts balanced, breasts sagging after pregnancy, weight loss or due to ageing may be reshaped. In breast reduction, part of the glandular and fatty tissue as well as excess skin may be removed and reshaped to a smaller breast. During the lifting process, tightening the glandular tissue is often combined with the removal of fat, i.e. a reduction, or the insertion of an implant to add volume to a lax breast envelope.  „Breast augmentation“

Breast reconstruction

For former breast cancer patients, a positive frame of mind is psychologically very important and provides important support in coping with the disease. To establish a better quality of life reconstructive plastic surgery can prove helpful. In many countries, women have the possibility to have their breast reconstructed following breast cancer surgery. The topic is important to us and we have compiled more specific information under the "Reconstruction" menu .

Other cosmetic procedures that are increasingly performed are:

In addition, eye-lid correction, wrinkle filling, botox treatments, nose corrections, or combined throat-and-face lifts are among the most popular cosmetic surgeries in Germany. *

Aesthetic plastic surgery, commonly referred to as cosmetic surgery, has become socially acceptable and is longer reserved to stars and celebrities.

A German survey from 2010 shows* that about one in six would be prepared to enhance her/his body through surgery. Many women in Germany opt for a breast augmentation. In 2011 and 2012, breast surgery was the most popular aesthetic procedure – followed by eyelid surgery and liposuction**. Men are now also opting more often for a cosmetic intervention. The rate of men who choose to have aesthetic interventions is currently at about 16%.**

Naturally beautiful with modern silicone implants

The currently available large selection of implant shapes and sizes as well as the specific nature of the silicone gel we utilize allow an experienced surgeon to shape a natural looking breast mound. The consistency of the gel is very similar to the body's tissues and contributes to the fact that the augmented breast is hard to distinguish from a natural breast.

Quality pays off

Information and education on what products will be used in a surgery are particularly important – it comes down to your body and therefore your safety and wellbeing. This is why quality should be the focus. With the innovative and certified silicone implants "Made in Germany" manufactured by POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics you have years of demonstrable safety using these implants and are on the safe side – and under warranty.
